Prosthetic Body Parts - noisy leg

Question
My husband is a RBK and has a little more than 2 years with his prosthetic. Our question is that now when hes steps you can hear the air release like an air pump. They told him that for him to try and change the sleeve which he did but the noise is still there.  As he steps you hear the air go out and then the air go back in.  Could it be the air valve, or could it be that he needs a new socket since hes shrunk so much. I would greatly appreciate your help on this question.

thanx

Answer
It can be one or a combination of several issues.  The best advise is to f/up with your Prosthetist to have them check the mechanical components (valve, sleeve, sock, liner, etc.).

If it is not a structural issue; pursue other areas that might be of concern.  More than likely if there is a swooshing (like a repeating tire leak) sound the valve/housing may not be clean and not operating properly.  Most valves (excluding elevated vaccum)can be repaired or replaced without issue (as a matter of fact,in cases of emergency, some parts can be purchased at your local hardware store).

If the socket is too large what usually occurs is a loss of vaccum with no ability to hold any suction.  The sleeve and/or liner will also be gappy and not allow for a seal.  The sound would be more like "farting" not a weezing sound (usually indicates a clog or crack in hardware).

You can test the valve by forcing air into the one way valve (outside-inward(add a bit of soap on the area of where the valve expels air)).  Or you can submerge the socket into water just over the valve and see if water will leak in.

Sorry these are vague instructions.  But without knowing your exact design and details it is hard for me to trouble shoot over the internet.  GOOD LUCK
