Protestantism/summary book of the Bible
Expert: Dr. Layman - 8/24/2004
QuestionHi there!
I have a hindu friend who would like to know more about the Bible, but is overwhelmed by the sheer volumn. Are there any good "cliff notes" or summaries of the entire book that you recommend? I'm looking for a book that does not dilute the essential message of the Book.
thanks!
Michael
AnswerSure thing, Michael.
The Bible can only validate Itself; millions of writers have failed in boiling it down to an "Idiot's Guide to the Sacred Word." It's a Christ-Holy Spirit matter, not a literary one. He must speak through the Word, creating new life Himself in the willing reader, relying on no human's interference. The Holy Spirt waters the seed.
But we can make it less overwhelming to our friend:
1.First of all, as you may know, an Indian's command of English is very very good. (I am assuming they are a real Indian Hindu, not a N.American "Western-Hindu-Wannabe") But, his command of the English of 500 years ago (the KJV) maybe be nonexistant. So I suggest you find a NKJV, Weymouth, or Modern KJV, NOT RSV!
2. If you can find just the New Testament, fine, get him that.
3. Get him to read just the Gospel of John. (I have seen small copies of just the Gospel of John, but that may be hard to find.)
4. Then get him to read the book of James.
5. Only after he has done that (no questions from him until has read them both! Have him take notes down and questions. You want him to not depend on you, but let the Holy Spirit teach him.)
6. Be praying for him, stay in touch with him while he is reading, but dodge questions until has has 'done his homework'. Discourage him from skipping around, speed reading or reading without asking God for His help.
7.Prepare yourself at the same time by reading the same books, in the same version, at home.Underline stuff! Don't answer questions from "your other translation" or the devil will get him into the "Translation Whirlpool" before God has time to melt his heart.
8. Keep me updated at my private e-mail: bart@outgun.com (It has a pretend name attached to it, not my real name.)
Put in the subject line: "Michael and the Hindu", so I will know it's you. I get lots of spam....
Hope this starts him on the Path.
