Psychiatry & Psychology--General - psychological terminology

Expert: Alan Auerbach - 10/30/2009

Question
Could you tell me the psychological term which is used to describe an adult woman (36) who seems to fall in love with one openly-gay man after another.  There is a woman in my job who spends almost all her free time in a very dependent and close relation with a gay man.  As far as I know they do not sleep together, but they do everything else together.  Before this man arrived at the job, she had a similar dependent relationship with another gay man who eventually left the job without leaving her a forwarding address.  Is there a name for this type of behavioral pattern?  Thanks for your help......

Answer
Sorry, Richard, there is no one term. Nor could there be.

Even the description of her behavior would vary according to her motivation. For instance, maybe she appreciates feminine qualities in men. Or maybe she's phobic about sex. Maybe she has a need to be abused. Maybe she wants a limited relationship that is unlikely to progress much further. Maybe she wants to "cure" the man. Maybe it's just circumstantial in that she happened to get involved with one, through whom she met the others. Perhaps she looks down on them, and wants to feel superior.

Thanks for asking anyway, and maybe next time there will be a clearcut answer.
