Question Hi,
I have a laughing problem that has been on my mind since a few weeks ago. I've had this laughing problem since I was young but it never became a big deal to me until now. Whenever I experience something funny or if someone tells me a really funny joke, I laugh as all people normally do. But after it's over, it's stuck in my mind and I laugh about it more. Sometimes when weeks pass by, I think about it and laugh. Is this normal or is this a major problem I have? Is everybody like this? Since a few weeks ago, I've been worrying that one day I might have to give a speech or presentation and think of something funny and laugh. So far that has never happened to me whenever I gave a presentation or speech in school. Am I just paranoid? I want to change this problem and have the ability to stop laughing when it is not the right time and when it's not appropriate and laugh when it is appropriate. Is it just who I am that I laugh about things way after it has happened? I also worry that I won't be able to get or maintain a job if I still have this laughing problem? What happens if I interact with people and all of a sudden I think of something funny and laugh? Ever since this has been on my mind, I've been trying to change this problem. One of the techniques I use is to think of the words you are saying while you are speaking therefore your mind will be busy thinking and won't be thinking of something funny. Is this a good technique? Do you have any other techniques? It has worked but there were times I continued to laugh when it was inappropriate. Whenever this happens, it brings me down and makes me feel I have no hope in changing. I even feel that I shouldn't laugh at anything at all if I continue to have this problem, which makes me feel sad because one of the most important keys to happiness is laughter. What do you say about this? Is this a laughing disorder? Is there even a disorder like that? Please help. I really need help.
Answer Hi Andrew, IMO, what is healthy is laughing. Our world needs more people like you. What IS unnatural is thinking that there is some kind of 'normal' that you can ever become. Even if you could become 'average', or similar to most people, I think that would make you even more neurotic. People want us to be more honest, not some kind of vanilla gray.....
