Expert: Daniel S. Harrop, M.D. - 11/2/2009
Question My daughter had been seeing a psychiatrist for ADD and anxiety disorder for many years. She was doing fine and only seeing her doctor yearly for an update and med renewal. Suddenly, he has vanished, left the practice, no forwarding address. Will I have to have her start all over with another doctor and pay for the initial visit and evaluation or is it likely the referred doctor will continue where we left off. Also if i don't care for the doctor that takes over, what do I look for in a quest for a new doctor?
Answer The best thing to look for is that that psychiatrist is "board certified." In addition, good indications are if the MD has hospital privileges, a medical school appointment, and is a member of the state psychiatric society and either the state or county medical society.
