Question
If Narcissism is probably the most widespread 21 st  century (if not all-time) epidemic, and if a core issue in Narcissism is failure to follow through on intimacy/romance , then it would be safe to say that Narcissism is probably the result of generations of breeding through heterosexual relationships that failed to rise above the mundane- as depicted approx in the biblical myth of Adam  and Eve.

Since  being in love gives a sense of uniqueness ,generated in part by the other person  why is it that Narcissists aren't able to keep in sync with that feeling even when they love it ? Why don't they choose to excel in morals that will uphold that beautiful feeling if excellence is their issue? And why isn't exploring the world and the self, with the partner enough excitement for them? What makes them prefer to struggle for misery instead of sail through happiness even when they have the chance? Where exactly does the "click" occur?

Answer
Pathological narcissism is a reaction to prolonged abuse and trauma in early childhood or early adolescence. The source of the abuse or trauma is immaterial - the perpetrators could be parents, teachers, other adults, or peers. Pampering, smothering, spoiling, and "engulfing" the child are also forms of abuse - see these:
