Psychiatry & Psychology--General/Verbal abuse

My friend and I are almost seniors. We live in different cities so we correspond by email only. We have known each other for many years and up to now I have been able to discuss anything with him and vice versa. Lately, though, things have not been quite as simple. A few days ago he was praising me and calling me a shining star. A few days later he reacted with extreme anger and hostility to a silly joke I had made. He said the it had degraded me. I apologized. Today I confessed to him that I was often lonely and my husband did not like to socialize. He tore a strip off me. He was merciless in his criticism. It was painful to read. Boohoo, he said..I had encountered this sort of response once before when I said that I felt like an orphan because my entire birth family had passed away and I had no other relatives. How do I respond to this type of verbal assault from a dear friend? What could be causing this? Should I break off our correspondence? He is retired and does not have any financial or family problems that I know of or any that he has shared with me because he does not trust that the information he shares on the Internet will remain private. (He seems to have a touch of paranoia.)
