Question
Hi, My father is diagnosed with OCD. Instead of cleanliness, he doesn't want the dust touched. He constantly makes sure the door is locked. My question is: are some people with OCD mentally cruel to their children yelling at them constantly and putting them down constantly, or does he have a coproblem? In his thinking, he is the center of the world and his children are not important.

Answer
Mark, he may just have a personality problem.  Or he may have a personality disorder that is superimposed on the diagnosis OCD. People with OCD cannot tolerate anything that they have to have set in their own mind.  If anyone upsets that or disturbs it it causes a great deal of anxiety in them and they often repeat what they are doing over and over again until it borders on the riduculous.  If you are a youngster it would be to your advantage to try to live as normal a life as you can and make your own life even if that means getting involved in youth activities or in some church youth groups or even spending time in a public library. If he is putting you down or being otherwise cruel to you , you must put that in perspective.  He is not like other people.  The OCD's seek to control the environment around them and control the people around them.  Do not become a part of his control group.  If you have other siblings encourage them to do the same.
