Expert: John Date: 9/8/2005 Subject: Psychiatry/Hypnosis - WW II captives
Question This is a general question I was hoping you could direct me to some literature on the subject. I saw an episode of "In Search Of" a long time ago where the subject being discussed was hypnosis and the power of the brain and memory resulting in physical manifestations. In the episode they showed footage of a WWII captive under hypnosis and the imprints of the ropes that once bound his arms actually appeared on his skin, obviously without the ropes. Where can I learn more about this incredible behavior and the power of the mind and memories resulting in a physical manifestation?
Sincerely,
Eric
Answer Eric, I do not know specific books you can look for but I also know that hypnosis can make a burn appear on a persons skin if they are hypnotizable which not all persons are. An actual burn on their skin can appear if they are given the suggsetion that their forearm is having a lit cigarette being rubbed into it. A patient can also have abdominal surgury without anesthesia and be in a semiconscious state which they can be given the suggestion that they are not feeling any pain at all which was actually needed for this woman. She began to feel slight pain until the hypnotist told her she was not feeling any pain. Upon conclusion of the operation she was told that she could awaken and would recover. Upon her coming out of the hypnotic state she asked for water which the dcotor or nurses promptly denied her until the hypnotist told them she can have anything to drink because she was never given any anesthesia . Persons given anesthesia cannot be given anything to eat or drink but she could. I suggrest you try a google search for information or if you live near a medical college look in their library. You cannot check out materials unless you go through a request by inter library loan from your home public library. Cheap bookstore books on hynosis are unlikely to offer you much detail.I have seen several groups of people hypnotized at once and not all of them can be hypnitized so they are excused. Those remaining would do all the things they were told to do like dancing to the tune of David Rose's classic " The Stripper". Boys and girls made gyrating motions to the song but they were told ahead of time that none of them would remove any clothing and none did. None of this is fake as some believe.
