Question Hi Stephen,
I have many dreams and inspirations in my life, and sometimes I fear that I won't reach success. I am now aiming to be a concert violinist (soloist), but I am told that I am also a gifted writer. Sometimes I feel that I also want to teach violin in my home country (Philippines) to uplift music standards there, but if I do that my solo career may suffer. In addition, I have a great hunger for learning and mastering so many subjects so I can talk about them intelligently. I feel a little lack of focus caused by too much passion and I was hoping you can shed light on this.
My questions are: Do you see my dreams of reaching the pinnacle of violin playing taking place (CDs, concerts all over the US and hopefully, the world as well)? Will I be able to reach my dream of publishing a book of poems or short stories? Or should I settle down in the Philippines where I can make a career as a violin teacher?

Answer Hi Regina,
First, I want to tell you that you should give yourself credit for being so mature and responsible and considering your career as you are. Your questions are those that would typically be from someone much older, so you are ahead of the game already.
I do not feel that you'd be happy focusing only on the violin, which I'm assuming would be necessary to be a world wide success, would it not? However, I do see success with your violin playing that will lead to other things. I do see you as being known for something to do with arts and communication.
Yes, lack of focus will make you a jack of all subjects but master of none. Focussing on one or two and doing one as a hobby may be your best bet. For example, you could focus on being a concert violinist, teach occasionally, and write and read in your free time.
You have your whole life ahead of you, so writing could be an option that you explore later. By the way, a book of poems is very difficult to market and sell through a publisher. There are better options, such as e-books and blogs. But I don't feel that's something you need to explore yet, and by the time you're ready to spend more time on writing, there will be even better options.
Also, consider where you'd like to be in 10 years. Think about your most important goal, what you need to do to reach it, and how much time you have for other less important goals.
I feel your best path is to do what makes you happiest and not worry too much about reaching huge success, though it will come if it's part of your destined path.
