Question
hello Dr Katherine. i need to help a relative of mine who is 20 years old. she has low self esteem, social anxiety and she says she has mind numbness she says she doesnt have feelings of happiness or sadness nothing, and to feel something she cuts herself. she feels her mind going blank very often and she fears she will blank out completely. at this time i dont know which is better a psychotherapy or a cbt therapist. what do you recommend? thanks a lot. ann

Answer
Ann, I am not a clinician.  However, I am familiar with CBT - and I would recommend it over traditional psychotherapy because CBT is highly effective and is faster.  Another type of therapy that is similar to  CBT is DBT - Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.  It is also very effective for people who self harm.

In both types of therapy, the client works on changing thoughts and behaviors.  They have homework and have to stay very focused and committed during the therapy process.  Both types of therapy are very effective - there has been a great deal of research on both.  Check out this link:

Good luck and happy thanksgiving.
