Public Relations/Career Switch PR to Journalism

Question
Hi!

I have more than 3 years of work experience in PR and have recently done my post graduation in public relations management. I am still not confident that i will be able to become a successful PR professional as i personally feel that contacts in media and big corporates/infulential people is very important for successfully running a PR business. I was tossing with the idea of first doing some journalistic work before re-entering PR..i think journalists get the best and easiest access to the people who matter, it is easier to develop contacts as a journalist.

My question is, will a reputed newspaper or media house employ me without any degree in journalism...i am very good at writing, i used to write press releases for my clients..but i dont know if that will convince any media house to employ me as a journalist. Also i wanted to know how common is this - a change from pr to journalism?

Would appreciate your advise in the matter.
Many thanks,
Isha

Answer
Isha,

It is refreshing to hear someone give journalism its proper due. First of all..journalism encompasses not only writing and reporting but PR, advertising, marketing and networking. I would continue on in your PR field and in your spare time take some journalism classes at your local college.
As for taking the reverse role of PR to newspaper (mostly it is journalism to PR) don't worry about it. Just check out the number of writers, reporters, and electronic media personnel who did not major in journalims but have achieved high positions in their respective fields. It is gratifying that you can write. That is the key to PR and journalims....write...write...write.
I would also get in touch with your local editor at your newspaper and inquire about filling out an application for
whatever interests you. Be prepared to show samples of your work. Get involved with your local chamber of commerce, the local media are usually involved there, here is where you can network and meet some of the movers and shakers in communications and commerce.
Stay with it...there is no magic formula or rules and regulations for success. Sometimes it is who you know and being in the right spot at the right time.
Good luck!
