Subject: Publishing question

Question
I've got 6 or 7 short stories in second draft, and a couple in first draft still. I've also got a handful of flash fiction pieces and 30 or so poems. I'm interested in publishing a book. I don't want to pay for it myself, but I'm not  interested in huge distribution so much as just going through the process and seeing a final result produced. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hi, Trent!

Well, you've got a couple of options with this arrangement. While it's quite difficult to interest a commercial publisher with a collection of stories by one author that haven't previously been published (like in magazines or such) there are several places where you can go to get them bound and in your hands. The trick is your saying you "don't want to pay" because those are the only two options. If you want them available for the public to buy AT ALL, then you'll need something other than your local Kinko's to make it happen. But if you don't mind paying *a little* one good option is Lulu.com. (http://www.lulu.com) For just a few personal copies, there's no cost to do the actual "publishing". You'd just have to pay for the actual copies, just as if you'd done it at a copy center. But the book wouldn't have an ISBN (an identifier number that's required to sell a book in this country) under the "no cost" structure. Still, for a small fee, you could get the ISBN and make it available for sale on their website (or you can link it on yours, or a MySpace page), Quite a few people visit their site. For a few more dollars, they'll post it on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble's website, which makes it easy for friends and family to pick up a copy.

Here's a link to their FAQ page about the cost, which will answer some of your questions:

This is the link to get started, if you decide you're interested:

Hope that helps a little and feel free to let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck with your project! :)

Cathy
