Subject: book cover fee

Question
A publisher asks what my pay rate would be for a book cover illustration - they buy first world rights.

Any advice about finding the right fee, etc?

Answer
Hey Jim,

Have you done any covers in the past? What did you charge for them?

Book covers can cost from free, like when you have an intern from an art college do it, or more generally from a professional starting at $500 to $5000.

How much time and effort will go into the book cover? What is your minimum hourly rate?

Is this for one print run only or multiple? How big is the first print run?

Will the cover become an integral part of their marketing package?

Will you retain ownership for future subsidiary rights or marketing ventures or will you sign a release giving them effective control over the use of the cover?

Are you going out of pocket for any stock or specific photographic / graphic images?

Will the cover be used on more than one product (i.e. book cover: perfect bound and hardbound, Audio CD cover, DVD cover, E-book PDF file cover, etc.)

There are quite a few factors that go into deciding how much you want to charge for creating a cover.

Regards,

Coach Rik
