Subject: copyright clearance for self-published book

Question
I am a senior citizen with a background in printing, publishing, wring,
photography and publishing/editing a small weekly newspaper for 25 years.
I am working with the centennial committee to publish a 200+ page
volume of our city's history. Probably 1/2 of the 150-200 pictures in the
book would be my own photos or pictures from the newspaper we owned –
and I understand, in the public  domain. No copyright problems there. What
is my status getting pictures off the internet to put in the book? Like from old
movies filmed here?  Or old postcards?   Thanks, QB

Answer
Quentin,

Congratulations on writing your book! About which city are you writing?

Copyright clearance is necessary for pictures taken from old films or books. I'm uncertain about copyright clearance on postcards.

I'm not an attorney, however. I suggest you get a professional opinion from a copyright attorney. Three top lawyers in the field are Ivan Hoffman in Los Angeles, Ellen Stiefler in San Diego and Darla Anderson in Santa Barbara.
