Subject: Publishing poetry
Question I have a lot of poetry over the years. I've always been told that its very very good. It seems usual to me though. But I thought maybe I should just put all my best poems together and try and get it published. What is the process for something like this? What would I need to do, and who do I need to communicate and relate to, to get it published? Thank you so much for your time, and effort for this inquiry. Thanks!
Spencer
Answer Hi, Spencer!
The trick with poetry is that it's really hard to find a publisher for an unknown with no prior credits. The good part is that if the poems are good, it's pretty easy to GET credits. Most poetry collections you see on the shelf are those which have been published in magazines and such and are more of a "compilation" than anything.
If your goal is to publish, then concentrate on sending your favorites in to magazines that publish poetry. There are any number of them out there, but which you should approach depends quite a bit on the kind of poem and the topic. I'd suggest stopping by your local bookstore and picking up a copy of the "2008 Poet's Market" by Writer's Digest Magazine. Here's a link:

They give lots and lots of magazines and other markets to sell to. Once you have a few publications under your belt, you'll stand a much better chance of getting an agent interested in a collection of your works.
Hope that helps, and good luck!
Cathy
