About D. Patrick Miller
Expertise
I am an independent self-publisher who sold three projects to major New York houses before starting my own company. I provide editorial services to a major literary agency in Manhattan and work regularly with authors at all levels of expertise. I can answer questions like these: What does "independent publishing" mean? Should I publish myself or use a service like XLibris? What is "print on demand" publishing? How do I publish myself on the Web? What are the best resources for learning about publishing? How do I find a literary agent? What are my chances of getting published by a major New York firm?

Getting Published or E-published - Self-Publishing

Expert: D. Patrick Miller - 10/9/2009

Question
I am wanting to self publish; however, I want to publish under a name that I have created for my writings. I guess I would like that name to be a publishing company for my own usage (for now). How would I establish this publishing company so that I will be able to publish that way instead of using another publshing house name?

Answer
To start a publishing company, you need to establish a fictitious business name under the regulations of your state, and fulfill any other requirements of your county or city. The other identifier of a publisher is to have your own set of ISBN numbers, which are available from

http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/index.asp

However, you should probably research everything that's involved in becoming an independent publisher. I'd recommend Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual, or any of the other books listed in my Publishing Guide at

best wishes,
