About Cathi Stevenson
Expertise
I can answer questions about the layout, formatting and design of book covers, in addition to helping people understand licenses and find sources for stock art and fonts.

Experience
I have been working in the publishing industry since 1981.

Organizations
Small Publishers Association of North America.

Education/Credentials
I have a degree in Behavioral Psychology and English, which helps me greatly in my design work. I have also worked in a print bindery, affording me hands-on experience in the production end of the industry. For eight years, I worked as a writer, copy editor and layout editor for the advertising department of a major newspaper. Since starting my own company, I have created approximately 1000 book covers for large, traditional publishing organizations; small presses and independent publishers. My clients have been featured in numerous high-profile media sources including Oprah, 48-Hours, People Magazine and the Today show.

Awards and Honors
Several, but two recent awards include a perfect score of 5/5 from Writer's Digest and a tie for second place in the Bay Area Independent Publishers' Association 2008 Book Awards.

Question
Hello Cathi,

There is a photo that I would like to use

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount-Yamnuska-szmurlo.jpg

but I'm not sure what information I need to include in it. I have asked at the help desk of this site:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mount-Yamnuska-szmurlo.jpg
(my question is titled "using an image file")

but I still do not understand. Could you explain it as you would to an elementary school student?

One of the responses that I got on the above help page was that I needed to include the whole license text; does that mean that I need to include everything on the page that the link takes me to (with the Preamble, etc) in the magazine?

Also, I have read about the Front-cover and Back-cover texts, but I still do not understand it.

For this particular image, it says "no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts." Does that mean I cannot print any words on the front and back covers if I use it for the front cover? (I know, I'm totally helpless...)

If I wanted to use an image that did not specify "no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts," does that mean I could only print five words max on the front cover? (The title of the magazine is three words, plus "November issue" - five words and that's it?)

Thank you so much!

Tzipporah

Answer
Hi Tzipporah,

If you plan to use this image in a commercial project, I would not trust any third party to give you permission. According to the Wiki info, the photographer's name is Chuck Szmurlo and from Googling, it appears he lives in Calgary Alberta. His FaceBook page is here:
http://www.facebook.com/chuck.szmurlo so try to contact him that way and ask for permission, and make sure you keep whatever he sends you for your records.

This sentence, "no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts" doesn't mean anything. Perhaps it's out of context, I don't know, but as it stands, it makes no sense.
