Subject: How to submit manuscript with graphics?

Question
Hi Bill,

I'm getting ready to submit a short story for publication, and I'm having some trouble with standard manuscript format.

There is one graphic in the story, a pie chart (which is a regular .jpg, not a table made in the word processing program). What is the standard or most professional way to put this in the manuscript?

Thanks!

P.S. Can I use footnotes in standard manuscript format, and if not, how can I indicate to an editor that there are footnotes in the story?

Answer
Congratulations on completing your short story!

In what program are you writing the manuscript? Most word processors have an Import feature to bring in graphics, such as your pie chart. In MS Word, you find this feature under the Insert Menu.

Yes, you can use footnotes in a manuscript. Are the footnotes necessary to the story? You may consider eliminating them, if possible, unless they are essential to the short story.
