Question I will be working in Puerto Rico for about a year, and returning to California. I would like to bring my car; Can I obtain a temporary importation permit? Or does the import tax apply to all vehicles entering the island ?
Answer Hola, Gabriel.
Although your question should be answered by the Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas here, which is the one in charge of issuing permits, licenses, etc; I could almost assure you that there is nothing called "temporary importation permit". I think that, no matter for how long you will have your car in the Island, the procedure would be the same. I must also tell you that the procedure is long and tedious. :(

Go down until you find "Moving to Puerto Rico". In addition to the information, you will find telephone numbers to contact the agencies directly.
I have a client that came to Puerto Rico for three months. Instead of renting a car, he decided to buy a used one. He paid $5k for it, and when he left he sold it at the same price. So, he didn't really spent a cent and he had transportation for the months he spent in the Island. Perhaps that could be an option for you.
It is my pleasure to be of help. If you think I can assist you further, just write me again at AllExperts.com.
