Question
Hello, I am a college student in Utah. I want to study Spanish in Puerto Rico, preferably at the University, for a month or year depending on price.  Are there Spanish courses offered through the University that I may take? I would submit papers for admissions.  I would also need an inexpensive place to stay as a student. Have any ideas?  Working part time would also be a bonus.  Any ideas there too?

thank you

Michael

Answer
Hola, Michael.
Local universities offer different programs for languages in the Island.   I must say that you must contact the institutions directly to see what are they offering, as perhaps some of them have summer programs, short-term courses, and others.  Here are links for some of our leading universities:

Universidad de Puerto Rico, http://www.upr.edu/home1600.html

Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico, http://www.inter.edu/

Catholic University, http://www.pucpr.edu/

Let me share this with you, Michael.  When I decided to learn English, I got a short, simple to read book in English and spent about three weeks looking for words in the English-Spanish dictionary to understand and finish the book.  Then, I got a pen-pal in Ohio, which was a girl that didn't have any exposure to Spanish, so I was obliged to write her in English.  In those ways, I learned reading and writing.  The hard part was speaking and understanding, which I did exposing myself to and English-only environment in my work place.  My first language is Spanish, of course, and I like this language so much, but at this moment I feel perfectly comfortable with the English I learned and I would like to learn French and Italian too.
So, at the same time that you are looking for Spanish courses, get that first book, my friend.  And, look for one of your friends in Utah that could talk to you only in Spanish, never in English.  I see that you are decided to learn another language - you will, and before expected.  It is my pleasure to be of help.
Saludos desde Puerto Rico, :)
Nancy
