Subject: 2 estate problems in P.R.

Question
We need legal help. We hired a lawyer by checking estate lawyers on the Internet (English speaking), but she has been a huge disappointment to put it mildly. We have 2 separate issues, my husbands inheritance from his grandfather's estate, but much more pressing-his mother's.
His mother passed away almost 4 years ago. My husband's   uncle who lived a few doors away said he would buy her house from us, but could not afford it at the time. She had a will when she lived here in Pa., but when she died we could find no will in her house. The uncle has "taken over" her house, has rented it out & is keeping the money, has also sold her car & was not on the title. We don't know where to turn. I called the Pa. bar association & they gave me the phone number for the Bar assoc. in P.R. but informed me that they are Spanish speaking only. We need help quickly as he now says he is going to sell her house. It is not his to sell.

Answer
Hola, Linda.
I respectfully differ from the information you got about the Bar Association of Puerto Rico (Colegio de Abogados de Puerto Rico).  Most of our lawyers are fully bilingual and deal with their cases in Spanish, English or both.  As far as I know,   the Bar Association won't provide lists of lawyers or refer you to specific lawyers, unless you are asking for someone in specific.
Their contact information is the following:
Colegio de Abogados de Puerto Rico
PO Box 9021900
San Juan, PR  00902-1900
787-721-3358, 787-725-0330
http://capr.org/index.php?option=com_contact&Itemid=3
To send an email:  abogados@prtc.net

My suggestion to you is as follows:  contact one of your relatives in the island and let him/her assist you to get a lawyer that deals with inheritance cases.  If this is not an option for you, get a copy of our telephone guide (Puerto Rico Telephone Company - 787.775.0000) .  If your property is located in the metropolitan area of San Juan, go to pages 1 to 36.  Specifically, in page 35 there is a list of lawyers who work with inheritance cases.
If at any time you decide to get the help of a realtor that could assist you with the services you need in the area of real estate, I could suggest that you contact Nancy & Miguel Pagán at YourRealtorinPR@aol.com
If you feel I can help you more, just write me again at AllExperts.com.
Buena suerte.
Saludos desde Puerto Rico, :)
Nancy
