Puerto Rico - Moving to San Juan

Expert: Jared Romey - 6/19/2009

Question
Hi I'm getting a transfer from DC to San Juan for work and would like to know what are the cheapest and safest places to live around the San Juan area. It doesn't have to necessarily be in San Juan. A few people recommended Trujillo Alto, Guaynabo, Bayamon and Caguas. I just recently graduated college so I can afford up to 1,000 in rent max (although I'm trying to stay lower). I'm Puerto Rican and most of my family live around Aguadilla so I'm familiar with that side but not San Juan. I also will have to drive to work. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Jaye,

The recommendations the everyone gave you are correct.  Check out www.clasificadosonline.com to look at rental costs for each of the areas you mention.

Keep in mind that Caguas is only about 20 minutes from San Juan, without traffic.  However, in the mornings coming to SJ and afternoons returning to Caguas, it will take a minimum of 45 minutes to commute, and up to 90 minutes if there are problems.  Keep this in mind, depending on where your office will be.

For a thousand dollars or less you can find a 600 sqare foot, one bedroom place, or a 450 square foot studio in the San Juan area, right on, or near the beach in Condado, Isla Verde, Ocean Park.  Also for that price something in Old San Juan may be an option.

Good luck,
