Puerto Rico - Scout Group visiting Puerto Rico

Expert: Nancy Torres - 6/22/2009

Question
Hello Nancy:
I am a travel agent , have booked 10 Boy Scouts to visit in July. They have a couple questions I can't answer.
1. What kind of Mosquito repellant do they need?
2. Do they need a bug net for sleeping?
3.What kinds of insects, snakes, poisonous plants to be aware of?
4. Do's and Don'ts of your culture while travelling and camping.

I am meeting with them tomorrow night. Could you please answer promptly?

Thanks
Kim

Answer
Hola, Kim.
There are usually Scout Masters traveling with the boy scouts that make all the contacts necessary when the group is traveling in or outside the country.  I know that there are a lot of questions when a group of youngsters is planning on traveling and camping - some of them related with security, permits, rules and regulations, etc.
Although I would like to help you, I am really not related to camping.  When my children were boys and girls scouts, the scout  masters and the group of parents in charge always took care of absolutely everything.   We only followed their instructions.
Here are a couple of suggestions that will help you and your group of travelers:
>Contact a the Boys Scouts organization in Puerto Rico - they are your best source of information:
http://www.bsapr.org/
>Contact the Asociación de Acampadores de Puerto Rico (ADAPRI) - Puerto Rico Backpack Camping Association.  They are a non profit organization with a strict environmental and ethics code, that promote backpack camping through the Island.

It is my pleasure to be of help.
Saludos desde Puerto Rico,
Nancy
