Question Hola mi Nobre es AlondraAnette. My friend and I are wanting to move out of the country and Puerto Rico was one of the places we are considering. We want a cheap and safe place to live. We would also like to know what jobs are out there. Is there a program in which I can teach english to students? We would also like to know about colleges in Puerto Rico. We will be soph. starting september 09.
Thank you so much for your help.
Answer Unfortunately Puerto Rico is not a cheap place to live. Since it is an island almost everything that is used/consumed here is brought in by ship, which increases the price. Some items are more expensive than in the US, while others are at similar levels to major US cities.
For some housing prices, you can look at www.clasificadosonline.com to get an idea of costs.
Again, I'm sorry to say, that it is not particularly safe in Puerto Rico at the moment, especially in more urban areas. Obviously, if you are in smaller towns, it is generally safer. I would suggest you look at the websites www.endi.com and www.caribbeanbusinesspr.com so you will get a better idea of the general economic situation in Puerto Rico.
The job market is also not good at the moment. In fact, unemployment is at 15% (I think the US is at almost 10%). Having said that, it is probably possible for you to find part time work teaching English to students, although I doubt a full-time position will be easy to come by.
The major colleges here are the University of Puerto Rico, Sagrado Corazon, La Interamericana. Here is a more extensive list: http://www.univsource.com/pr.htm
