Expert: Vicki Dressler Date: 6/26/2008 Subject: My pug's nose
Question I have a registered black female pug and she has every distinct characteristic of a pug. I got an apricot one just a couple of days ago so she could have a companion and when you compare the two, he looks nothing like my black one. All it comes down to is the nose. The older lady who breeds them gave me papers signed and stating his breed is pug, but his nose sticks out, its not squished in like my black pugs. This concerns me. I don't want to find out this lady scammed me and lied about the breed. However, she does have her license. Couldn't she lose it if she false advertises her dog? I wouldn't think someone would take that risk. This is what she does for a living. I should have asked to see the parents and inspect the dog over more. I got home, and was looking at my black one, and then the new apricot one, and the noses just are nothing alike. Again, my black pug's nose is squished in, as it should be, and the apricot one sticks out. Is this normal? Sorry for all the details but now I am questioning what breed of dog I actually got. He has all the other traits. Snorts. Grunts. The hair. The wrinkles. The tail. Its just that nose. seems weird, but I have to know. I'll love him either way, but I have to know. Answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Answer His longer nose is due to poor breeding but he is most probably all pug.
Consider that he is lucky as he will have an easier time breathing and he should be able to tolerate heat and humidity better then a pug with a smushed face.
I am assuming your are not planning on showing or breeding your pugs. I would not breed one that is not show or champion quality.
