Question
you have bales of hay. for some reason, instead of being weighed individually, they were weighed in all possible combinations of two: bales 1 and 2, bales 1 and 3. bales 1 and 4, bales 1 and 5, bales 2 and 3, bales 2 and 4, and so on. the weights of each combination were written down and arranged in numerical order, without keeping track of which weight matched which pair of bales. the weights in kilograms were 80, 82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, and 91. your initial task is to find out how much each bale weighs.

Answer
The sum of these weights is 856/4 = 214 kgs
Let the weights be w1, w2, w3, w4 and w5; where w1<w2<w3<w4<w5
w2-w1 = 2 (=82-80)
w5-w4 = 1 (=91-90)
w1+w2+w3+w4+w5 = 214
w1+w2 = 80
w4+w5 = 91

We have five equations with five variables.

w1+w2+w4+w5 = 171
Hence, w3 = 43 kgs
w1 = 39 kgs
w2 = 41 kgs
w4 = 45 kgs
w5 = 46 kgs
