About Bernard Hawkes
Expertise
Please read my Policy Statement. Puzzles and brainteasers. Ask and I will help! That said, I`m best at pure logic puzzles. E.g. You have twelve apparently identical coins of which one is counterfeit, being either slightly heavy or light. Determine the counterfeit coin, and whether it is heavy or light, in no more than three weighings using a balance scale. Rebuses and riddles I`m less good at, but will generally get the answer given time. Requests for oddball facts (e.g. What was the second most common girl`s name in 1900? [genuine example - answer: Ruth]) I regard as outside my remit. However, you are welcome to ask, but I may not be able to help you.

HIJKLMNO is H20 (H to 0)

Moth/Cry,Cry,Cry is Moth Ball (to cry is to bawl!)

These answers were perhaps found years ago, but in seeking the answer to Moth/Cry,Cry,Cry myself, I found your inquiry. I found the answer to the Moth rebus in a 1982 article on JSTOR entitled The English Literal Rebus and the Graphic Riddle Tradition, by Michael J. Preston
Western Folklore © 1982.

lol these are only hard to us because we think too much. I got most of my help from my 8 yr old brother; Little kids use good logic. Anyways here are some I answered myself:
"HIJKLMNO" : H20 (H to 0...get it water?)

"Moth
CRY
Cry : Mothballs ( sland for crying is balling; 'she was balling her eyes out'. so moth balls in plural)

"II II
o o " : circle under your eyes ( The 'I' and the 'o' are actually geometrical shapes."

lol thats all I can figure out for now.
Cry"

About the HIJKLMNO
the anser is H to 0 - H20 - as in water.

I'm not sure if you can make sense of this, but I was told Moth cry cry cry was 'Moth balls' I didn't get it, but maybe you would.

K, hope it helps!

Librarian wrote at 2007-12-05 21:41:09
I can't really help with the others, but in 6th grade we were given the Moth
cry
cry
cry
Rebus. The interesting thing is this was not originally done in English and therefor has no answer in English. Does that make sense? I can't remember the language he said it was originally written in. Sorry I couldn't give the actual answer to the puzzle, but it has been too many years.

Here are a few more possible answers

HO - Big laugh

HIJKLMNO - Water (H2O)

ME QUIT - Quit following me

II II - Circles under your eyes
O O

Cale wrote at 2008-05-17 11:57:50
Ok, two of these are pretty common rebuses.

Bernard was wrong about the 8th one:
II II
OO OO

It's actually rings under the eyes, such that you get when you don't get enough sleep.

HIJKLMNO
This is a chemistry teacher's favourite one to give students. The letters are from H to O, and the chemical formula for water happens to be H2O. So the answers water.

That's all I can get.

terry wrote at 2008-08-03 11:02:48
