About Popcorn Guy
Expertise
I`m pretty good in most every genre of movie, but horror and sci-fi are my best categories. I`m also pretty good on the old studio films of the 30`s - `50`s.

Experience
Three walls of videos in my den, and a shelf of reference books. Also have a degree in film criticism, which helps...

Questions about Movies - 1950's monster movie search

Question
Hi--I was watching a movie on tv the other night, and wanted to know if you can tell me based on what I remember.  It was set in space, with these people trapped on a space ship.  A monster was trying to get them, and the monster was very smart--at least that is what they were saying.  I think that where they were was getting increasingly cold.  Also, the monster was played by a man who became a pretty well know actor in Hollywood, but I don't remember the name.  For all I know, this could have been his first role, and I don't think anyone could actually see his face.

Thank you

Answer
Hi, Cliff...

I think... I THINK... the movie you're looking for is the original version of "The Thing," or, "The Thing From Another World," as it is known now. James Arness, who went on to be a legend as Matt Dillon on "Gunsmoke," played the monster whose face was never seen onscreen. The plot revolved around a crew of scientists working at a base in the Arctic. They found a spaceship embedded in the ice, and found "something" just a few feet away from the ship. The "Something" turned out, of course, to be the monster, trapped in ice. The ice thaws, and the monster wakes up, and he is ticked off!

Now, I might be wrong, but see if this fits what you're looking for. If not, send me a follow-up and let me know...

Hope this helps,

PCG
