About Popcorn Guy
Expertise
I`m pretty good in most every genre of movie, but horror and sci-fi are my best categories. I`m also pretty good on the old studio films of the 30`s - `50`s.

Experience
Three walls of videos in my den, and a shelf of reference books. Also have a degree in film criticism, which helps...

Questions about Movies - 1970's B film about Salem witch trials

Expert: Popcorn Guy - 9/29/2009

Question
QUESTION:
I've been wracking my brain but cannot remember the name of a film I saw as a child -- it has haunted me since. It was a B film, featuring a woman (possibly red-haired), her handsome lover and a town gone amok accusing many of its citizens of witchcraft. Some of the graphic & gruesome tortures depicted were a woman having her tongue torn out; Chinese water torture on a man in a cell; a man a spiked chair; a woman being tortured with thumbscrews; a man stretched on a rack. At the end, the woman's lover is hung by his arms from a tree and is pierced with a spiked vice (it looked like 2 question marks facing each other, hinged at the top, with spikes in the round part). It was a color film with an all-white cast, period costumes (judges in white wigs, men in ponytails). I don't remember any of the actors in it. It was probably a B film shown with a major feature like "The Sting." I don't really want to see the film again, but I would like to know the title and who made it.

ANSWER: Marji....

Think you may be looking for The Witchfinder General... check it out and see if this is what you are seeking... if not, let me know, and we'll track it down...

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thank you. In researching The Witchfinder General, I ruled it out because the story's ending did not match. Your reference, however, led me to similar films. I finally found out that the movie of my memory was released in the U.S. as "The Mark of The Devil," a film originally made in Germany in 1969. Why would anyone take a child to see that?

Answer
Marji...

I am laughing myself sick at your last comment... LOL... like you said, it was probably a double feature, and they figured you wouldn't remember any of it.... glad you found your movie, even if my theory was wrong... hope I can help you again some time soon, and actually be right...
