Answer
Hello Philip,

This film was called "THREE ON A MATCH" and was made in 1932 by Warner Bros/First National, and directed by Mervyn LeRoy.

Here's the story outline. I haven't seen this one myself, but it sounds like an interesting film.

"If three people light cigarettes from the same match, one will die soon, or at least that's how the old superstition had it. After being apart for years three women, friends at school, meet and bring each other up to date on their lives. Mary (Joan Blondell) has been in reform school and is an entertainer. Vivian (Ann Dvorak) is married to an attorney and has a son she idolises. Ruth (Bette Davis) works as a secretary. Vivian invites her friends on a cruise. Vivian runs off with Mary's gangster boyfriend; she is then divorced and her former husband marries Mary. Vivian's life takes a nosedive. Soon she's living the life of a slattern, hooked on cocaine and bootleg liquor, neglecting her son like he's so much excess baggage. Meanwhile her husband and friends are frantic to get the little boy back and set things right again. The gangster hires three men to kidnap their son. Vivian must sacrifice her life to prevent this.

In this movie's 64-minute running time, director Mervyn LeRoy managed to include Depression-era social commentary, drugs, crime, sex, violence, and some surprisingly well-fleshed-out characterisations. The young Bette Davis, looking exceedingly beautiful, and Blondell and Dvorak are all great in their roles. Even more remarkable, though, is the number of future stars that can be spotted in the film: Lyle Talbot, a young Anne Shirley, Edward Arnold, and Humphrey Bogart in a great role as a menacing gangster.

Glad to be of help. Cheers........Mel.
