Quicken & Other Budget/Accounting Software - accounting software for churches

Expert: Linda Saltz, CPA, QBalance.com - 9/1/2008

Question
we are a small church (less than 100) members, but are in need of some accounting software.  However we are unsure which is best for our basic needs but still allows for growth and potentially integration with a membership module (for individual giving records)

Answer
QuickBooks Premier non-profit is terrific for small churches. You could use QuickBooks Pro, but the non-profit has a few features you will find useful including reversing journal entries which may be necessary at year end if you collect fees up front for participation in activities.

What is nice about QuickBooks is that it is such a well known software that you may be able to solicit help from your congregation.
Also if a bookkeeper leaves, you can easily find another familiar with the software.

It is also flexible, so if you make mistakes, it is easy to fix them.

Because the task of tracking donations by member is tedious, many churches will still outsource that or use another software, but it is possible to do in QuickBooks. Some even use a separate company file to track tithing in QuickBooks. They will create a statement charge for the amount which is pledged (but rename the template as Tithing statement) and e-mail or mail monthly to members as a reminder of their status against the pledge.

Hope this helps,
