About Audrey Zohner
Expertise
I am an expert rag quilter. I have made over 100 rag quilts and would love to assist others with questions and methods. I don't know much about actual quilting like machine or hand quilting or applique. I am, however, the resident expert on rag quilting in my town. If you want to make a rag quilt, I am your woman.

Experience
I have been sewing for 12 years and rag quilting for 4. I have experienced just about every pitfall there is in rag quilting. Check out my quilts at audreysragquilts.etsy.com.

Subject: quilting with flannel

Question
A navy blue piece of flannel for a quilt is covered with lint (from the washing I
guess).  How can I get rid of the lint, or should I look for a better fabric?

Answer
First of all, the best way to prevent your flannel from linting up is to ALWAYS wash it in a delicate cycle.  If you wash flannel in a normal cycle, it will ball up and look horrible after about 3 washings.  However, if you wash it in a delicate cycle, then it won't ball up and will look almost like new every time you wash it.

To get rid of the lint now, you can either pick it off by hand or get a sweater defuzzer.  They have some at Hancocks, but none of the ones I have tried have worked all that well.  It seems to take just as long to pick off the lint by hand as with the tool.

So to review, the best way to get the lint off is by hand and the absolute best way to prevent the lint buildup is to wash and prewash your flannel in a delicate cycle.

Have a great day!
