Question
I AM IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING MY MOTHER A QUILT I AM NEW AT THIS I WANT TO SEND EACH CHILD OF HERS AND THEIR FAMILIES A QUILT BLOCK TO DESIGN SOMETHING SPECIAL ON IT SPECIALLY FROM THEN THEN WHEN RECEIVE THEM ALL BACK MAKE QUILT HOW MANY QUILT PEICES DO I NEED FOR A QUEEN OR KING SIZE BED IF SQUARES ARE ABOUT 8X8 WITH A BORDER HELP THANK YOU ESTHER

Answer
There are so many variables possible in the layout, but I will give suggestions for one possible layout.

I will also figure your 8" squares are finished size, which means they are 8 1/2" from raw edge to raw edge before sewing together with 1/4" seam allowances.

The top surface of a queen size mattress is 60" x 80". A king size mattress is about 80" x 80". One or multiple borders could be added around a central pieced section the size of the mattress top which hang down the sides of the bed as far as desired (just to the top of a dust ruffle or to the floor.

For a central pieced section 56" x 80", you would need seventy 8" finished blocks. For 64" x 80", you would need 80 blocks.

For a central pieced section 80" x 80", you would need one hundred 8" finished blocks.

I hope this information helps you with your quilt plans. Let me know if I can help further.
