Subject: ran out of batting

Question
I made a quilt top that I thought was crib size when I went to put the batting in the quilt the batting was too short.  I have another package of crib batting, can I just add a piece of the other package to the quilt?

Answer
Yes, but it will need to be SECURELY attached all along the joined edges to prevent separation after many washings and frequent use.

What I do is overlap cut edges about 1/4" and do a multi-stitch zigzag stitch (not a simple, programmed zigzag which will make it pucker along the entire line of stitching), either programmed or free-motion, over this 1/4". The stitching flattens the overlap to a uniform thickness which matches that of the rest of the batting. This produces a solid addition to the previous batting.
