Subject: Rag quilt Christmas ornaments
Question Have you ever made Christmas ornaments using the rag quilt procedure? I would like to take some red flannel fabric from my father-in-law who passed away recently and make star Christmas ornaments for the family members. Any suggestions or other ideas are also welcome. I did take a number of his shirts and already made each family member a 18 inch teddy bear. Thanks for any help or ideas you can give me -- I appreciate them all.
Answer Yes, actually, I made some cute star ornaments last Christmas. I cut star shapes out of flannel and matching homespun and layered it like this: flannel on the back and front, one layer of homespun in the middle. I sewed about 1/2" around the edges and then clipped them like a rag quilt. No turning inside out, just sew around and clip. The stars were super cute and raggedy around the edges.
If you wanted to, you could sew all but one point, stuff batting in the middle and make them poofy. Or you could stuff them with potpourri so they smell nice. Then just sew around that last point, clip the edges and wash/dry gently. Oh, the potpourri wouldn't survive the wash, so I would just wet the edges and then rub them like crazy with a towel to agitate the edges and make them rag.
Hope this helps.
