Quilting - stitch and tear

Expert: Connie Hester - 9/30/2009

Question
Hello Connie,
I was given some stitch and tear cloth to use. As I am new to quilting and applique can you tell me what this is used for? Thankyou Wendy

Answer
It is just one of many tear-away stabilizers. It is used behind single-layer fabric to prevent embroidery or, sometimes, applique from bunching up or distorting the fabric. The portions of the stabilizer which are not covered by stitching on the backside are torn away and discarded.
