Subject: Invisible Thread

Question
Hi Patricia, I have been told when using invisible thread I should use it in the needle or the bobbin - NOT both.  Is this correct and do you know the reason for it?  Thanks and look forward to hearing your reply.  Best wishes

Answer
Hi Lynne,

Yes this is correct.  It isn't as stable as thread, which is plied and strong with very little stretch.  Invisible thread is like fishline and it does stretch a bit.

The only reason to use invisible thread is that it is, well, invisible.  So you really only need to use it where you do not want to see the stitches.  Usually this is in the top.  So use a thread that matches your backing material in the bobbin and the invisible thread on the top.

I have never, personally, used this type of thread in the bobbin.  Usually the reason for using a thread in the bobbin is that some specialty threads, like metallics, don't work from the needle side as well.

Thanks for the question and happy quilting!

Pat
