Question
Vinette,
I hope you don't mind me asking what seems like the same question.  You said that you pinned your quilt layers together on a bed?  Oh my, now I'm really wondering about puckering.  Certainly the surface will be big enough, but I'm still wondering about a puckered backing.  I guess I'll give it a try.  Thank you for your patience w/my questions.

-----Question-----
Thank you for your quick response.  I will be hand quilting the quilt and using the safety pins, as you suggested.  The table I'll be using is 6 ft. long, but not wide enough for the whole quilt.  I really don't have any other convient options.  Is it possible to pin baste the 3 layers in sections?

-----Question-----
I have my top, batting and backing all ready to go together, but I keep hesitating to go further because the last quilt I layered puckered when I quilted it.  I want to baste the 3 layers together w/safety pins.  The quilt is bigger than the table I have so I don't know how to make sure that all layers are put together smoothly.  So, I'm at a nervous standpoint right now.  I hope that you can help me move forward.

HI Linda
I use safety pins also and hand quilt. You did not say if you are planning on machine or hand quilting.

What I do with a large quilt is to find a large area of floor and lay it out.

I have found that by using a Q-snap frame works great and I rarely have to worry about the backing puckering.

HI Linda,
Yes it is possible to pin baste in sections.  Before I had a large floor area in the basement, I used to do it on my bed.  Just had to be careful not to pin the bedding to the quilt.  I had no problems.

Answer
Hi Linda
When I use the Q-snap frame, it is square, I do not have a problem with puckering.  When I used a round frame, I had a lot of problem with puckering.

What I do after pinning it all is start from one corner, place the frame bottom wnder where I am going to work, remove the pins in that area and then place the top parts of the frame on.   I rarely get puckers and when I have they are in an area that i wont be working in until I reposition the frame.

enjoy quilting.
