Question Hi there: I am making a rag quilt for my daughter. I am using 10 inch squares. 100% cotton on the top and bottom, with 1 layer of 100% cotton flannel in the middle. Do I need to sew the X into each square. Some patterns say yes and some say no.. What do you think?
Answer Hello,
As long as your flannel squares are the same size as your top and bottom squares, then you don't have to sew the "X" because the flannel layer will be sewn into the side seams with the top and bottom layers.
When people use cotton and polyester batting, they usually don't want it hanging out the seams, so they cut the batting smaller than the regular squares. You know, top and bottom squares are 6" and the batting squares are 5". You HAVE to sew the X when your middle/batting squares are smaller because otherwise they will move in the wash. It's just like quilting a regular quilt. You quilt the layers together so they don't move and bunch.
RULE TO LIVE BY: If your middle layer is smaller than the top and bottom layers, then you HAVE to sew the X. If your middle layer is the same size as the top and bottom layers, then you don't.
