Expert: Vinette de Phillipe Date: 3/20/2003 Subject: backing material for quilts
Question I have a piece of material(44wide by 316long) I am wanting to use for the back of a quilt top(90wide by 108long) Is there any way possible to do it? How would you use this piece of material or would you have them bring a different back, they have stressed they would really want me to make this work! What would happen if I turned the material to run across instead of the long way on the back of the quilt or would it be better just to piece more on the backer? I'm just getting started quilting and don't want to ruin someones quilt top by putting the back on incorrectly. Would this make a difference on how the quilt would stretch or would it cause any other problems? Would appreciate any feedback you could give me on this promblem Thank you
Answer HI,
Here is what i would do. cut two strips 44x 116, cut the last strip in half to be 22 x 84. you will have two 22 inch wide strips. stitch the two 22 inch strips together so you have one long strip.
place the 22 inch strip in the center, sew the 44 inch wide strips on each side. place the seam of the 22 inch wide strip in the center.
this method will be neat and look planed, rather than like you ran out of fabric. using the measurments will give you a border of 4 inches on each end, and more on the sides. also this will have the material go the long way of the quilt.
it really makes no difference which way the fabric is placed for the back, up and down or cross ways.
