Question Hi Vinette,
I am a college student with a HUGE desire to make my first quilt. (and I have no prior experience). So I went out and bought 4 different fabrics that the lady said would go greatly together. NOW, I don't know where to begin. I want to make a quilt full of squares, but do I make 2X2 inch squares? Smaller? Bigger? And can I do it by hand or should I use a sewing machine? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!
Rilla
PS What are common diameters of a finished quilt too? I bought 1 yard of 4 different patterns (with a red theme)
Answer HI Rilla,
what i usually start students out with is 5 inch squares, cut on the diagonal to make triangles. use a dark and light fabric triangle, stitch on the diagonal, using 1/4 inch seams, to make a square. use 16 of these squares to make a block. there are hundreds of ways to combine the 2 color squares to make interesting and easy blocks for a quilt. i would use a sewing maching. much stronger.
also would suggest using graph paper to design the layout of the squares in each block, that way you can try different designs before stitching.
i see that you just want squares, would suggest 4 inch squares or you might get tired of the small squares. hope this helps \
