Subject: quilt backing

Question
How much larger should the backing be than the quilt top?  The backing will not be used for binding.  Should the batting be the same size as the backing or top?

I'm trying to finish a quilt and the backing is only 3" larger than the top, but before I add one more border . . .

Thanks,
Rosalie

Answer
Your backing and batting should both be at least 2" larger all around, to allow for take-up and/or shifting of the layers as they are quilted, regardless of technique.

After quilting has been completed, then the excess backing and batting are trimmed away.
