About Audrey Zohner
Expertise
I am an expert rag quilter. I have made over 100 rag quilts and would love to assist others with questions and methods. I don't know much about actual quilting like machine or hand quilting or applique. I am, however, the resident expert on rag quilting in my town. If you want to make a rag quilt, I am your woman.

Experience
I have been sewing for 12 years and rag quilting for 4. I have experienced just about every pitfall there is in rag quilting. Check out my quilts at audreysragquilts.etsy.com.

Question
Hi..love your answers to other questions by the way!

I'm new at sewing and can't wait to try a rag quilt. I have been browsing pictures of quilts online and wonder how you would get say a pink border around a white square? Is it due to the color of flannel on the back or in the center?
Thanks in advance
Julie

Answer
Congrats on the courage to try something new!  Rag quilts are great starter quilts because they're easy and fun to sew.  I love them!

With a rag quilt, the flannel you use for the middle AND the back will show on the front.  I made the mistake on my first quilt of using purple flannel for the middle layer of my dad's dark blue quilt.  Needless to say, he uses it all the time, but still likes to comment on the purple peeking out of the front.

If you want a specific color around your squares, then I would use it either in the middle or the back.  I made a quilt for one of my friends that had pink on the front, white in the middle and black on the back and it looked so cool.  I was able to get all her favorite colors together without a lot of work and it looked great.

Oh, one last note.  If you are using a dark color with a light color, ALWAYS pre-wash the darker color.  I made a beautiful quilt with navy and cream flannel and had the blue bleed all over the cream.  It looked kind of psychodelic, so it still get used for picnics and such, but it was a state fair winner for sure before it went into that washer.  Always pre-wash anything if you think it might bleed.  Just to be safe.

Have fun with your quilt!  Thanks for the question!
