About Audrey Zohner
Expertise
I am an expert rag quilter. I have made over 100 rag quilts and would love to assist others with questions and methods. I don't know much about actual quilting like machine or hand quilting or applique. I am, however, the resident expert on rag quilting in my town. If you want to make a rag quilt, I am your woman.

Experience
I have been sewing for 12 years and rag quilting for 4. I have experienced just about every pitfall there is in rag quilting. Check out my quilts at audreysragquilts.etsy.com.

Question
I would like to try something different, rather than the regular "square" rag quilt. Where is the best place to look for patterns? Also I read something the other day that said if you use the  same size of "middle" squares you don't need to sew the X. Is this so?

Answer
Hi,

The best place I have found for rag quilt patterns is online.  Just googling "rag quilt pattern" brings up a bunch.  I have looked in the quilt shops around town and come back empty-handed.  I found one book in Idaho Falls and it wasn't very good.  Anyway, I always look online for patterns, both free and priced.

As to your second question, you are right in thinking that you don't have to sew the "X" if the middle layer is the same size.  You only have to sew the "X" when your batting layer is smaller than the rest of your squares.  You see, if you don't sew an "X" through the smaller middle square, it will move when you wash the quilt.  However, if the middle square is the same size as all the other squares, then it will be sewn into the seams with everything else and it won't be able to move.

Thanks for the question!  Have a great day!
Audrey
