Expert: Michael Dean Date: 7/27/2008 Subject: What to expect after Chantix
Question I was a pack a day smoker for 35 years and tried everything in the book. Chantix has been my biggest sucess. I just started my last month supply. I am amazed at my progress thus far and never want to return to smoking. My question now is "What can I expect after I finish the Chantix? Will the urge to smoke be alot greater?" I've searched all over the Internet and haven't located an answer. I just want to be prepared.
Answer Dear Terri,
That is fantastic that you have succeeded. Are you on the 12 month Chantix program?
The physical symptoms of nicotine addiction are gone in a month. So you should have no physical cravings. The psychological hold is another story and differs from person to person. But the fact that you have gone this far is very good news.
I'd suggest you read "The EasyWay to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr. He explains how smoking has no positive benefit in your life and the many advantages of quitting. The book has been a best seller in Europe for many years, and you might find it useful. If you run into any problems call 1-800-QUIT-Now and find out about resources in your state. Some states provide free therapy and telephone quitlines, and these are useful.
Can you stay out of situations where you might smoke, at least for a month or two?
