Expert: Michael Dean Date: 12/31/2007 Subject: Quit smoking, no cough
Question Hello Mr. Dean. I have been a smoker for 30 yesrs and am happy to say that I quit cold turkey one month ago and have no intention of ever going back. I have been taking niacin which I read helps clear the toxins a little quicker. My question is this, I expected to be coughing up alot of mucus and that hasn't happened. Just in the past few days my throat is feeling dry and a little raspy. Someone told me when they quit they started feeling lousy after about a month. I don't know what to expect here. Shouldn't I be coughing?
Answer Dear Pat.
That is great that you have quit. The recovery process is different for each person. I would increase your exercise level, and you could certainly use tea or cough drops for the dry throat. If you can swim, that is great exercise.
Maybe you don't need it, but I'd suggest you read "The EasyWay to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr. He explains how smoking has no positive benefit in your life and the many advantages of quitting. The book has been a best seller in Europe for many years, and you might find it useful. You should also call 1-800-QUIT-Now if you hit a rough patch down the road.
