Quitting Smoking - STOP SMOKING WITH ACCUPUNCTURE

Expert: Lynn Cole - 2/28/2002

Question
My friend has tried zyban but is now looking at trying accupuncture. Do you know if this has been successful in stopping the smoking habit? My friend is 36 years old and has smoked for at least 15 years; she is a moderate smoker; not heavy.

Answer
Hello Kathryn
Nice of you to be looking out for your friend.  I HIGHLY recommend acupuncture for anything.  I go every week and no matter what is wrong he is able to help me.  That is worth the time and money to try.
My next biggest recommendation is the patch.  This helps with replacing the nicotine then reducing the amount in your system slowly.  I have had great success with many patients with the patch and talking to a therapist as well.  Smoking often becomes the persons best friend.  It is there in good moments and in bad.  It does give you a buzz at times.  This is often missed by my patients.  Nicotine is just as hard to get off of as heroin.  Thats a medical fact.
More than anything your friend has to be truely ready to quit and give it her all.  I am an exsmoker and it took several quit trials before I quit for good and I did not smoke for that long.  The average number before a person finally quits is 7 times.  Hope it is less for your friend.
Try any of the suggestions or all of them.  Take care and if you have any concerns or questioins I will be here.
                    Lynn
