Question My question in twofold, I've been a smoker for over 20 years, I'm trying to quit, my doctor gave me Chantix, the first day was easy. Today is day two and it's not so easy, I don't know how to NOT smoke. Also, I found out my 16 year old son is smoking now, he's been sneaking out of the house at night after I go to bed! Generally he's a good kid, with good grades and a heart of gold! What can I do? For me Not to smoke and for him to stop?
Answer Dear Melody,
Hang in there. There is a support plan at the Chantix web site, www.chantix.com, that might help. Also call 1-800-QUIT-NOW and find out what resources are in your state. They may have a free quit line, which will give you help.
You might get your doctor to also prescribe Zyban. This reduces cravings in a lot of people and can be used with Chantix.
I am sorry to hear about your son. Getting your cigarettes out of the house will help. The more you can do to keep him from getting fully addicted, the better.
I'd suggest you and your son read "The EasyWay to Quit Smoking" by Allen Carr. He explains how smoking has no positive benefit in your life and the many advantages of quitting. The book has been a best seller in Europe for many years, and you might find it useful.
If you do break down and light up on Chantix, (WHICH I DO NOT RECOMMEND) the drug will block the nicotine and you will still be recovering from the nicotine addiction. The hope is that you break the psychological addiction and stay quit. The Carr book may help you there.
