Topic: Quitting Smoking

Subject: smoking and lung cancer

Question
Mr. Sharma,
This actually isnt a question, but more of "my story". Wether you deside to put this on the site is your call, but I feel this message needs to get out there.
Im a single Mom, 43 and was just diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer. I'm currently awaiting the results from the "staging process" I just had this past Friday My boys are 10 and 15, and the hardest thing I ever had to do was to tell my children. To look into the eyes of your child, and give them this sort of news, was nothing less then heart breaking. To watch your children who had just completed the "DARE" program at school, knowing full well what this diagnosis means, well up with tears, and ask if I was going to die.
As a smoker, I actually would get angry when the boys would come home and "preach" to me, about smoking. I never smoked in my house because of my children, feeling I was "protecting" them! I NEVER thought about this sort of Impact. Why? I don't know, I guess I never thought it would happen to me.
I don't have a chronic cough, I don't cough up anything I was able to work at a very physical jop, without getting winded. I have a very muscular build, for a woman, and look very fit. I had been going to the Mayo clinic for different health issues, and did under go surgery there in June. It was in the pre-op x-ray when something was spotted in my lungs. They ran a CT scan and seen two nodules one in each lung. They were small, 6mm in the right lung, and 3mm in the left. They recomended re-scanning in 3 months. SO In August I re-scanned, and all was stable, no changes. So about 3 months after this scan my DOctor called me, and gave me a couple options one being "treating this aggressivly" and going in and removing the one in the right lung to "see" what it is. They couldnt do a biopsy because of the location, and the size. Well, I have a history of severe reactions to anesthesia , and opted to re-scan in 3 months, because of the risk of my reactions, and the fact they were
stable".
Well I re-scanned in less than three months, and to my and my Doctors suprise the nodule in my right lung has tripled in size, and has a "spiculated" shape. She then ordered a PET scan whcih showed malignant.
For someone with "no symptoms" it all seems sereal. But I look back now at what and how I had been feeling for a long time, dispite my "physical appearence" as being very fit, I had been totaly exausted, I had some very minor "twinges" in my right chest, but thought it was just from packing some boxes. It was nothing of constant pain and very tollerable. Never did I think it was nodule growing.
I admire all of you who have beaten this demon addiction! And those of you who continue to struggle with trying to quit PLEASE don't give up! If you fall and pick it back up, TRY, TRY, again.
I would'nt want any of you, to have to look into your childrens , parents and siblings eyes and give them this sort of news.
I now am struggling with the guilt, of feeling I have "cheated" my children and family! I only wish I had quit MANY years ago!
Thank You for taking the time to read this, and my hope is that if I can make ONE person think, just for that second they feel they NEED a cigarette, take that second instead, to look into your childrens eyes, It may give you the strength to make it through that craving.
May God bless you all and give you the strength to beat this demon!
Annette(none as "Mom" to two beautiful sons)
